Michigonians are more harmful than the Americans most of the others?

I was in a camp in Lakeport, MI (north of Detroit), and people looked at me funny because I guess I was not like other WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) … they gave me dirty looks … but surprisingly, the people black in Detroit was very friendly and nice to me. I had the same negative experience in Ohio. I'm from New York and I'm from Russia … I think we're used to seeing my work there. Why are there such people? They made me hate Americans a little.
