TomTom ONE 125 – GPS receiver

TomTom ONE 125 – GPS receiver

The TomTom One 125 is not the newest or striking portable navigation device market, but okay. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest o. What it offers a GPS 125 is a solid entry level for first time buyers or those seeking the basic navigation functions. Like the TomTom One 130 S (except that it includes maps of Canada or text to speech functionality), GPS is easy use and affordable price of $ 179.99. There are some advantages and disadvantages, of course. For example, you will see a 3.5-inch screen instead of a 4.3-inch screen and, as mentioned above, you get the text to speech functionality. However, it offers the important moments, with accurate tracking and clear instructions audible.

Design

One thing you notice about the TomTom One 125 to the right of the box is its simple and compact design. It's a way similar to the TomTom One 130 S, which measures just 3.8 inches wide by 3.2 inches high by 1 inch thick and weighs 6.7 oz. It is small enough that it could have on hand for navigation on foot or riding a bicycle, and the GPS has pedestrian and bicycle routing modes as a bonus.

In the front, is Touch screen 3.5-inch WVGA. With a 64,000 color output and 320×240 pixel resolution, the picture is quite strong, although the display is on the side smaller. After reviewing a series of 4.3-inch models recently, one of 125 display is particularly small. Still, we can see maps so clear and easy to read menus. The user interface is simple and intuitive, with two pages of main menu and large, easy to understand icons. In the Preferences menu, You can also change the colors of the map, adjust the position of the status bar in the map screen, choose the night mode, and more.

Those who onscreen keyboard is slightly narrower due to the smaller screen, so I made some mistakes when entering addresses. The good news is that the 125 offers predictive text, so results may begin to surface as soon as you start entering letters. We appreciate that you can choose between QWERTY and ABC format, and also there is an option to switch from a larger keyboard to a smaller, but we can not imagine any reason why you want to do so.

No much more than the NDP. You'll also find a power button. A mini-USB / power connector is at the bottom of the device. The speaker is located in the rear with brackets to attach the car mount.

The TomTom One 125 comes with a vehicle EasyPort mount (windshield and dash), a USB cable, car charger and reference material. EasyPort The car mount is the same as the one included with the TomTom One 130. The accessory is a large circular ring it attaches to the back of the GPS and an adjustable arm to secure the windshield or dashboard disk. To ensure a secure seal, there is also a button to lock the accessory in place.

The assembly EasyPort is not tough, and faced a few problems on the road. It was used board – as Technically the windshield mounts are banned in California – and for the most part, the GPS was left in place, but there were a couple of times when we travel to certain parts rough road and one 125 out of the crib. TomTom We wanted to keep things simple and small, but we would take a great accessory if it means more security.

Features

Like the rest of the company A series devices, the TomTom One 125 offers basic navigation features in an easy to use for first time buyers and minimalists. The system comes preloaded with U.S. maps only, and you can enter your destination by address, city center, postcode, or intersection. Alternatively, you can choose a favorite location or recent destination lists and automatically route home from its current location by touching the Home icon.

The 125 offers several routing options, including fastest or the shortest route, with or without toll roads, and so on. As mentioned above, there are also pedestrian and bicycle modes. Once into your trip, you can review the route on the map, the addresses of text, or get a running demo. If you ever wish to avoid a part of the route, can press the "Find alternative" icon to get new directions. The system also supports automatic recalculations multicast routes and the travel.

The database PND attractions including all major categories, including ATMs, gas stations and accommodation. Unfortunately, can not search for restaurants by cuisine. If you have more specialized interests, the catalog includes entries for beaches, campgrounds, cultural centers, and more. There are several ways to plot to POI: you can search for them along your route, near your destination, or close to home.

You can view maps in 2D or 3D. A bar been in the bottom of the screen displays useful information such as distance and direction of next turn, remaining distance and estimated time of arrival. If it seems more or less information, you can customize what appears in the status bar in the Preferences menu. Tapping the left half of the status bar (where the following statement is shown) to repeat the voice prompts and gives you access to the volume control. There are also two icons in the upper right and upper left that allow you to zoom in and out of maps.

In addition to visual cues, the TomTom One 125 offers guided step by step instructions by voice, but unfortunately, unlike the 130s, you get the text to speech functionality. This means that you will hear more generic directions like "Turn left in 100 feet" rather than specific street names. Although the 125 is a basic system, there would still have liked to see the inclusion of text to speech functionality.

There are some additional benefits. As the latest TomTom GPS, the 125 includes one that says "Help!" security, which gives access to a range of tools and information in case of an emergency. For example, a "Where am I?" function that gives your current location, longitude and latitude, and more nearby intersections. In addition, you can find the nearest police station, hospital, car repair shop, and other services with a single touch of the screen. It is very useful and gives you some peace of mind, especially if you are in unfamiliar territory.

Performance

We tested the TomTom One 125 in San Francisco and Los Angeles. From a cold start, it took about two minutes for the GPS to get a fix on our location under partly cloudy skies, while subsequent starts were much faster. As we drove around San Francisco, the unit did a good job tracking the location and keep up with our movement. He was also able to maintain a GPS fix as we drove through the Financial District, where buildings high often block a clear view of sky.

GPS was used on two trips: one from San Francisco to Los Angeles and one from the Marina District of San Francisco headquarters to the city center from CNET. We entered our start and end points in the first trip, and the A 125 returned with a route in less than a minute. Although the route is quite simple, NDP smoothly guided us through several exchanges of road, especially in Los Angeles when we neared our destination.

We have experienced similarly positive results in the second trip. The TomTom ONE 125 offers precise and, unlike the TomTom One 130S, we could hear the voice-guided directions with no problem. They were loud and clear, but again, we had functionality text to speech. Finally, we missed several turns along the way to test the rate of route calculation and the GPS was able to return to normal quickly.
