Free Campgrounds Canada

Are there places to camp for free in Canada as there are in the U.S.?
My friends and I often enjoy camping in the U.S. in the multitude of national forests, where you can camp for free, basically anywhere (except in designated camps, which charge a small fee per night). Almost anywhere in the areas administered by the Bureau of Land Management are the same. Are there similar areas in Canada? For example, Canada has a system similar national forests in the country that is free where almost every time you want?
In Ontario there are large tracts of Crown land. Residents can field free for up to 3 weeks at one site. With some exceptions noted in the link does not residents need a permit which costs $ 10 per night.
