Hammond Louisiana Campgrounds
Recently there has been a series of tragedies and horrific events that have traumatized individuals nationally and internationally. 11 September will be engraved on the minds of all those old enough to have understood the implications. Hurricanes in Louisiana last year surprised us. The deaths of global icons as Princess Diana and Pope gave citizens around the world in pain. Medicine Hat has recently experienced a triple murder that has become a focus of media throughout Latin North. I have been asked to do radio, newspaper and television interviews and presentations for this reason. My goal is to help people who are trying to make sense of the situation and deal with personal effects in their own lives.
The first thing I remind people is not to make assumptions about any situation. Nobody knows all the details of any tragedy and it is very important that there is no speculation, since it can easily lead to gossip that further aggravates the situation. Secondly, it is important to remember that even in the same time there are tragedies that are happening positive activities and achievements throughout the world. In fact, even those involved in the rescue and recovery process can be symbolized as bearers of hope. Third, allow you and your loved ones, mourning throughout the healthy way possible. Grief involves experiencing strong emotions such as fear, anger and sadness.
Many worry that a similar tragedy could happen to them. This can lead to an examination of one's own mortality. Some people may try to protect those they love, but often with exaggerated behavior. Shock and denial may force others in a form of restraint. Take care of yourself and your family as you experience thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with pain. Fourth, find resources to help. The tragedy allows us to examine our lives, identify our weaknesses and then learn to deal with them.
We tend, in Canada, to think of our communities as small, friendly and safe. They are usually, but when a tragedy happens that we lose sight. Keeping things in perspective we can replace fear with faith and weakness with strength. We can adopt unhealthy life patterns or growth from the experience – the choice is ours.
