Maples Campground
Why can’t I move non-ash firewood?
So what’s with the emerald ash borer beetle stopping me from moving MAPLE firewood?! I think this quarantine, while justified for ASH wood, is being used to justify charging big bucks for firewood near campgrounds! It’s ridiculous, particularly when I have maple logs and leftover unfinished pine woodwork at my house that is NOT infested with the ash borer beetle.
If anyone can prove to me why this quarantine somehow also applies to non-ash wood, I’ll give you the best answer and associated bragging rights!
I would guess that 90%+ of campers cannot distinguish ash from other hardwoods, especially if the bark has come off. Birch is easy to identify because of it’s white paper-like bark, but most hardwood looks very similar to the untrained eye. That’s why the ban includes all hardwoods.
Softwoods that come from conifers are easy to seperate from hardwoods. In Michigan, the ban only includes the movement of hardwoods and excludes softwoods.
