Glacier National Park received its designation in 1910. George Bird Grinnell, an early explorer of Montana, was instrumental in the government's insistence U.S. protect this land. Today, some 2 million people visit the 1,500 square miles of the park annually.

You have the option of one of the 33 rooms at the inn, four restored railroad cabooses, and six modern cabins. The restaurant is open for three meals a day. Reproductions of historic Great Northern dishes are featured items at the hotel, James J. Hill Gift Shop.

West Glacier: There are dozens of hotels and camping near West Glacier. Three properties are on the shore of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park. In the far south, in the village of Apgar, is the Apgar village inn (the last glacier area lodge built by the NG) and the Apgar Village Lodge. Apgar has a visitor center, restaurant and gift shops. At the north end of Lake McDonald's, are the magnificent Lake McDonald Lodge, Holiday Inn. The main house was built by the GN in 1914 in a Swiss Chalet reason. The complex has three restaurants, a gift shop, and a campstore.

Whitefish: Columbia Falls, Kalispell and Whitefish has numerous accommodation options including hotels, villas, bed and breakfasts, ranches and camps. Within an hour's drive from Glacier National Park, this alternative is attractive for those who want to experience more than just the park. For example, whitefish Mountain Resort offers winter sports and summer hiking activities. In addition, Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of Mississippi River, is known for its fishing and boating activities. There are many good restaurants and shops in this area.
